Phils US-Plattenfirma Atlantic Records feiert Mitte Mai 40. Geburtstag, und hat für diesen Anlass ein hochkarätiges All Star-Live-Konzert organisiert, das im TV und Radio live übertragen wird. Neben einem Auftritt mit Genesis, einer Solo-Nummer und Teil eines All Star-Background-Chors bei Foreigner performt Phil allerdings auch im Duet mit Sam Moore - der einen Hälfte des legendären Duos Sam & Dave - und der ex-Blues Brothers Band zwei Klassiker, darunter auch das bereits mit Eric Clapton aufgenommene You Don't Know Like I Know.

Das Demo bekommen außerdem die Filmemacher von Buster als Vorschlag von Phil in die Hände, die es prompt für einen Rohschnitt des Films nutzen. Ursprünglich gar nicht geplant, beteiligt sich Buster-Darsteller Phil Collins schließlich doch auch als Musiker und Sänger an der Musik zum Film und arbeitet dafür mit einem seiner Motown-Helden, Lamont Dozier, für passendes 1960er-Jahre-Feeling zusammen. Ab März verschanzt sich Phil bis September wieder einmal mit seinen beiden Genesis-Kollegen in ihrer gemeinsamen "Farm", um das nächste Album We Can't Dance zu schreiben und aufzunehmen. Irgendwann in dieser Zeit wurde dort unter Nathan Easts Federführung mit Phil und Eric Clapton auch das Grundgerüst einer Cover-Version eines Earth, Wind & Fire-Klassikers aufgenommen, welche erst 25 Jahre später fertig gestellt werden würde.

Die We Can't Dance Tour mit Genesis führt ihn ab Mai zunächst in die USA und nach Kanada, dann bis zu einer über zweimonatigen Pause durch Europa, und schließlich im Oktober und November durch England, Schottland und Wales.
