Nach der Mama-Tour mit Genesis und seinem Überraschungserfolg mit der Solo-Single Against All Odds sitzt Phil Collins im März für ein "one off"-Projekt am Schlagzeug. Sänger & Gitarrist Dave Edmunds hat den Job, einen "passenden" Soundtrack für die 1950er Jahre-Teenie-Klamotte Porky's Revenge! zusammenzustellen, und nimmt eine Cover-Version eines Songs aus den 1950ern mit ihm, Paul Martinez und Robert Plant (der gerade mit seinem All Star-Spaß-Projekt The Honeydrippers alte Nummern recycelt) kurioserweise unter dem Band-Namen The Crawling King Snakes auf - einer von Plants ex-Bands aus den 1960ern.

Zurück in der Heimat beginnt Phil mit ersten Überlegungen für sein nächstes Solo-Album. Aber es sind außerdem schon wieder seine Skills als Produzent und Instrumentalist gefragt. Nachdem Phil bereits mit den Phenix Horns, der Bläsertruppe von Earth, Wind & Fire gearbeitet hatte, will nun deren Sänger und Frontmann Philip Bailey sein drittes Album unter Collins' Federführung aufnehmen. Sogar ein Duett der beiden entsteht und wird für beide noch zum Welthit werden. Hier arbeitet Phil Collins das erste mal mit dem gefragten Bassist Nathan East zusammen, was in Zukunft noch öfter passieren sollte...

Während das neue Album auf den Markt kommt, ist Phil Collins und seine "Hot Tub Club"-Band bereits mit Proben zur anstehenden The No Jacket Required Tour beschäftigt, die ihn das nächste halbe Jahr auf Trab halten wird. Zunächst gibt es von Mitte Februar bis Mitte März Konzerte in Europa, gefolgt von Konzerten in Australien und Japan von Ende März bis Ende April. Im Repertoire hat er dieses Mal die beiden Non-Album-Tracks und The Impressions-/Curtis Mayfield-Songs People Get Ready (wie bereits schon auf seiner ersten Tour) und It's Alright.

Nach der Tour gibt es für Phil ein großes Live-Finale der besonderen Art. Als Steigerung des erfolgreichen Band Aid-Benefiz-Projektes findet am 13. Juli 1985 Live Aid mit parallelen Konzerten weltweit statt. Vor allem die Konzerte im Londoner Wembley Stadium und im John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia mit Auftritten zahlreicher Mega-Stars werden weltweit live im TV übertragen. Phil Collins ist dank des Überschallflugzeugs Concorde im Line Up beider Konzerte und tritt zunächst solo und im Duett mit Sting in London auf, wie auch solo und als Drummer für Eric Clapton und Led Zeppelin in Philadelphia.

Nach einer Sommerpause geht's für Phil gleich wieder auf Invisible Tour mit Genesis: vom 18. September bis 24. Oktober in den USA und vom 23. November bis 20. Dezember in Neuseeland und Australien.

Noch bevor es mit Genesis in die nächste Runde geht, spielt er im Januar bei zwei von drei Eric Clapton-Gigs in der Royal Albert Hall in London als zweiter Drummer neben Steve Ferrone. Der zweite Abschnitt der Invisible Tour von Genesis bringt Phil ab Mitte Januar bis Anfang März in die USA und nach einer kurzen Pause für ein paar Konzerte Mitte März nach Japan. Mitte bis Ende April ist Phil dann schon wieder mit Eric Clapton in den USA auf Tour, wovon auch einige Mischpult-Mitschnitte auf Bootlegs landen, u. a. mit folgendem Song...
