Still Life und World Record sind vielleicht leichter zugänglich als zB Godbluff. Das ist schon harter Stoff. Aber absolut brilliant.
Bei Vital könnte die Soundqualität abschreckend wirken.

Die kargen, schroffen Mittsiebziger Alben gefallen mir am besten, gefolgt von den neueren Arbeiten seit 2005, aber das schön verspielte Pawn Hearts ist für den Einstieg tatsächlich besonders gut geeignet.
War auch das erste Album, das ich von VdGG kannte.

Die VdGG Charisma-Alben erscheinen in einem 17 CD+3 BD Boxset, mit dabei auch neue Stereo und 5.1 Mixe von vier Alben (H to He Who Am the Only One, Pawn Hearts, Godbluff und Still Life), Videomaterial, BBC-Sessions und ein bisher unveröffentlichtes Livealbum.
Die Alben mit den neuen Mixen werden auch einzeln neu aufgelegt (5.1 dann auf DVD).
Das Boxset gibt's übrigens bei Just for Kicks Music aus Deutschland für EUR 135.- inkl. Porto (Vorbestellung, erscheint erst Anfang September).

Ich finde, das eingängigste Album ist das zweite, aus dem Jahr 1970: "The Least we can do ist wave to each other". Für mich war es das erste und rückblickend betrachtet ein vorzüglicher Einstieg. Ich kaufte es, weil ich damals über das Buch von Gallo gelesen hatte, dass Genesis damals vor VdGG spielten. Dieses Album ist verhältnismäßig (in Relation zu den anderen Werken) eher ruhig, sehr atmosphärisch, psychedelisch angehaucht. Sollte man es aber evtl. bei einem Album belassen wollen, wäre "First Generation" die erste Wahl, so eine Art Best of the olds. Die neueren von VdGG als Trio gefallen mir aber auch sehr gut. Sie haben was, was die früheren nicht haben, so was von Gentle Giant der Neuzeit, aber es fehlt auch etwas, was früher da war: Die rohen Urgewalten und das Saxofon. Ich war froh, dass ich die Band noch mit David Jackson 2005 live erlebt habe. Später (2017) hatte ich mal David Jackson mit David Cross live auf der Loreley erlebt, mit Stücken von VdGG und King Crimson, da fehlte mir wiederum Peter Hammil.

Im September erscheint ein neues Album von Peter Hammill mit Isildurs Bane namens 'In Disequilibrium'. Nach dem Album 'In Amazonia' ist dies die zweite Kooperation von Peter Hammill mit dieser Band

Van der Graaf Generator – The Charisma Years 1970–1978 (2021)

English prog rock band Van Der Graaf‘s entire recorded work for Charisma Records is being released in a 17CD+3 x blu-ray box set. This package features remastered albums, bonus tracks, BBC sessions, rare video footage, new stereo remixes and 5.1 surround versions.
The studio albums features on The Charisma Years are as follows: The Least We Can Do is Wave to Each Other (1970), H to He Who Am the Only One (1970), Pawn Hearts (1971), Godbluff (1975), Still Life (1976), World Record (1976) and The Quiet Zone / The Pleasure Dome (1977).
All of these have bonus tracks such as A-sides, B-sides and all of the surviving BBC sessions recorded by the band. CD 4 is almost an entire disc of Pawn Hearts sessions.
Additionally, the double live album, Vital (1978) is included, as is a recently discovered and previously unreleased entire concert recorded in Paris in December 1976 by French radio.
The last four CDs in The Charisma Years (CD14 to CD17) are new stereo mixes of H to he Who Am the Only One, Pawn Hearts, Godbluff and Still Life. These have been remixed from the original multi-track tapes by Stephen W Tayler.
