Die Aufnahme ist nun fast genau 50 Jahre alt. Hat mittlerweile jemand schon mal die Lyrics komplett raushören können? Oder ist der Text irgendwo wieder aufgetaucht?

Es fällt mir schwer den schlechten Sound wegzudenken. Was ist "wegdenken" eigentlich für ein (Un-)wort?
Im Prinzip ist alles schon gesagt, mich fasziniert an solchen Aufnahmen, dass man die Entwicklung erkennt, wenn man soweit zurückschaut. Was aus allen Fünf geworden ist, wie sie sich auch als Band gefunden und verbessert haben.
Für das Potenzial würde ich 14 Punkte vergeben, das Stück selbst kommt bei mir auf 7 Punkte.

Die schlechte Qualität der Aufnahme kann nicht verhehlen, dass es sich hierbei genau um den Stil von Genesis handelt, den ich am meisten liebe, und der am besten von Trespass, dem Jackson Tape, und den drei Longtracks von Nursery Cryme + Get'em Out By Friday und Can Utility And The Coastliners repräsentiert wird. Bis zu meiner Todesstunde werde ich darunter leiden, dass es keine LP zwischen Trespass und Nursery Cryme und eine weitere zwischen Nursery Cryme und Foxtrot gibt.
Hilfreich ist auch hier wieder ein Blick an den Schluß von Paul Russell's Buch "Play me my song" mit dem genialen Interview, Seite 203. Tony sagt, dass Phil "The Light" in die Band eingebracht hat, auf die Frage hin, ob er was an Songs anzubieten hat. Tony sagt es nicht direkt, aber gemeint damit ist (neben dem Text, der wohl zu 100 Prozent von Phil ist) die Grund- und Songstruktur, die instrumentalen Erweiterungen und Zwischenspiele sind dem gemeinsamen "improvisierten Jammen" (ist das Festlegungs-Vermeidungsstrategie, hinterfrage ich?) geschuldet. Schon wahrscheinlich, dass hier und da für die Aufnahme für "Nursery Cryme" (zu der es nie kam, "wegen bereits genug Material vorhanden" (sagt Tony) noch etwas geändert worden wäre (sage ich). Der Text (sagt Tony) drehte sich um (die biblischen Figuren) Josef und Maria, und hätte auch was mit Jesus zu tun. Phils Vorlage war gut, und sie konstruierten einen Longtrack daraus. Peter und Phil sangen das Stück unisono. Die Bass-Linie stammt von einem anderen, unveröffentlichten Genesis-Stück "I've Been Travelling All Night Long".
Ungefähr bei Minute 1 gibt es wohl einen Schnitt im Band (Klebestelle, Fehlstelle). Bei Minute hören wir eine Art (nicht mit Text, sondern von "Ahs" getragen) Chorgesang, bei welchem mir starke Parallelen zu einer Sequenz eines der Stücke des Jackson Tapes auffallen, nämlich "Manipulation" ab Minute 2:09 - (vergleiche mit "The Light" bei 2:30). Göttlich die Sequenz ab 4:30, Wechselsspiel zwischen Tony und Peter. Bei Minute 7:00 flacht es dann leider ab, "Ahh-ahh-ahh". Slipperman-Anklänge höre ich keine.

Paul Russell: Inzwischen ist sie (Anmerkung von mir: übrigens durch TM) ein wenig bearbeitet und verbessert worden.

Zur Zeit höre ich alle paar Tage mir das Lied an. Bei jedem Durchgang höre ich immer wieder etwas heraus oder ich habe Ideen, was dort gesungen worden ist. Sobald ich ein halbwegs zufriedenstellendes Ergebnis vorzeigen kann, werde ich es hier rein stellen.
