  • Gibt es schon Neuigkeiten?

Ähm ... nope ... es gibt da Probleme mit ... Interessen...

Herrlich!

  • And So To ANT

    by Gitgo Faraway

In loving memory to The Four-Star- Anthony Phillips EvAnt 2014

    Ekstassionell… exeptionell…antionell!

To begin with the ending: At last some of us had 5 wonderful days in a small village mid of Germany and 4 wonderful days with Anthony Phillips instead of 6 hours as planned. I’m sure this kind of event will never ever be repeated again, no way – an active artist like Ant could barely effort being away from the point of decisions at his studio for so long. (A pat on the shoulder for Italy, due to our days Ant had to cancel a following visit in Fanland No 1.)

And what a party it was, beginning with a pizza, ending with a dance! Days for the memoirs. To me the talks with Ant - being around him, watching his fine-mannered ways - changed my own humble life forever.

To begin with the beginning: Four guys from Genesis-Germany, dedicated to the group for ages, invented and cultivated a very special kind of fandom. Far more than "just" running a very vivid fanclub for 27 years now, their research and documentary-output is known to be as precise as possible, every inch of information will be checked and proofed. Even before Genesis-Output began slowing down, Helmut, Peter, Bernd plus Christian focussed on the solo-works while always supporting the wider circles of artists around the core-group(s).

Encouraged by a successfully organized first fanmeeting in 1993 the founders and a growing team of volunteering technicians and experts created a series of unique fan-events. Steve Hackett happened to be one of the first Genesis-Members serving a direct communication with the genesis fancommunity - in pre-internet-times at a live long-distance-call on telephone. Later the fanclub saw visits from Ray Wilson, Richard Macphail, Armando Gallo, John Mayhew, The Musical Box, Serge and his Lamb-Documentary, every event intrigued fans from far away to a complicated trip for a visit at a lovely little public hall in Helmut’s hometown, a small village near Fulda. Steve Hackett and brother John later attended a bigger event in Remscheid which honored Steve’s work and led to an enthusiastic, admiring new fanbase. And now … 2013 … the surprising announcement of an Event to enlighten the work of ANT. How ...?

Anthony Phillips is known for being one of the most important influencers to the unique early Genesis-Style. Later his wonderful first solo-record “The Geese and The Ghost” touched our hearts.

Alas, travelling to an event in the middle of nowhere isn’t a hobbyhorse to everyone. Attending an event where the artist doesn’t perform on stage (instead he would be honored by fans interpreting his music) couldn’t stimulate everyone’s imagination – thus we saw many friends and musician say nay – but, uh oh, how they should regret it after the event.

Tickets for the announced 6-hours-Saturday-Event sold out within a day, so Ant accepted the invitation for the following Sunday. 2 x 100 fans saw a wonderful mix of Anthony Phillips’s musical output, interviews, question-and-answers, Ant's-life & work-quizzes. But much more – they saw the man.

Relaxed, focussed and polite Ant used every spare minute contacting fans eye-to-eye. His themes spread over a wide range – history, politics, literature, psychology, design, arts. The absolute contrary to a misogynist and absolute contrary to a bully – Ant was really interested in our lives. In interviews he painted a picture of his bread-and-butter-work as a composer of Library Music. I had read the Anthony Phillips Biography by Andreas Lauer, had spent nights with redwine and the Phillips-collection of my 100%-Ant-fan-girlfriend plus, when in England, had listened to a lovely whole-film-soundcreation for a documentary on >Raising An Authistic Child< - unforgettable to me - but still was washed away when imagining his enormous output.

In his empathetic way Anthony listened to the various amateur-artists performing his music, scribbled down remarks, entered the stage after every gig. (For setlist ... look here ). Ant shared touching memories – his feelings while creating the song, the personal value and importance this song carried for him – before he impressed us with empathetic, sometimes funny, always honest comments for each musician.

A pleasure to see Martin Brilla (Synhesizer & voc in group), Michael Donkel (piano solo), Steffen Gerlach (percussion & drums in group), Sascha Krieger (guitar, synthesizer, voc in group and guitar & voc stand-up solo), Andreas Lauer (piano & voc solo), Stefan Mehlig (piano solo) , Tom Morgenstern and family (guitars, synthesizer, vocs), Peter Musto (keyboard & voc solo), Gereon Schoplick (12-string solo), Bernd Vormwald (guitar & voc in group), Thomas Waltner (synthesizers and flutes in group) performing the Art of Ant. Ant's music seen from different angles, great!

Ant being the headliner we saw three more “stars” glimmering. The amateur-artists seen as a group came as second main attraction. Ant didn’t public any keys to his work, so many weeks of research and transcription had to be done alone in your chamber, key by key, line by line before practice. The result was overwhelming. Audience stunned, ears wide open, hearts wide open, thrilled by those lovely covers and our bravehearted amateurs on stage.

Before and after the performances and all-time-around-us we could enjoy the third shining star of the AntEvAnt: The wonderfully curated, professionally and fanishally perfect organized “Ant Exhibition”. Walls were covered by various treasures, posters, single-varieties collected a lifetime by Helmut, Peter and Bernd, completed by items out of collections Michael Donkel, Marc Bühler, Chris Wilcox, Andreas Lauer. The awards for Quiz-Winners included Peter Cross-Books, Ant-Paraphernalia and lovely Posters or CDs. The stage was decorated with a set plotted by designer Helmut: Big and small details from Peter Cross’s Ant-Cover-Art, funny little details like ‘Ant sitting in a tree’ combined with a benign font-sign-painting by Peter Cross dedicated to this event. If ever this set will be sold, it’ll be mine!

What good is an event without it’s hidden basis – the fourth star. We were groomed and cared for by a perfect team from the first minute (ticketing). I had the pleasure to watch the “roadies” setting the stage, that’s what I call a perfect team-play. We saw an affectionate airport-transfer, brilliant soundboard, focused filming director, such a cute entrance-team, fine catering, even finer cocktails, best security of all times – plus, the hosts available for everybody, giving this special touch of familiarity, always friendly, politely and relaxed.Thank you for everything. We had such a fantastic time!

But for now – why did Ant change my humble life? We met several times as we stood in the same hotel. He had talked to many fans in private and on sunday, within a stage-break, he came to me for a talk. We spoke about “to lose and to find”, about hard cuts in life, private catastophies and how he personally handled his worst and probably deepest cut, changing the energy into a new, better creativity - he began to study Music, got a University Degree, started a successful carreer. Not a single word came in a patronizing way. To see the world through his eyes opened mine.

    Thank you, Ant.

Thank you, It-Team. Thank you all friends and fans and artists for charming every minute of the 22nd and 23rd (and 24th) march, 2014, into ‘the memoir of a lifetime’ to me.
